Asheville Wedding Photographer | Biltmore Estate Wedding Photographer: Lynsey’s Bridal Session at the Biltmore Estate – Asheville Photographer

Biltmore Estate Wedding Photography -

This was one of my favorite #bridalphotographysessions of this year!  Now that Lynsey and Tyler are married (they had a beautiful wedding), I can post a few of my favorite images from her wonderful bridal photography session at the #BiltmoreEstate / Biltmore House.  I loved working with Lynsey; such a beautiful bride and fun person! This was my first time shooting a bride in a tree (arboreal bridal or arbor bride? LOL) and its one of my favorites!

A small note about Asheville’s greatest destination for wedding photography -

Biltmore Estate is quite possibly the largest attraction in Asheville, North Carolina, and it is fabulous for wedding photography. Asheville’s Biltmore House, which is the central house of the estate, was built by George Vanderbilt around 1895 and is the largest private home in the US – it is 178,926 square feet and has 250 rooms. The Biltmore House is still owned by one of Vanderbilt’s descendants, it remains one of the best examples of the Gilded Age, and the Biltmore Estate Gardens remain some of the most beautiful in the country.

What a happy smiling shot!

We call this a view in Asheville!  I guess the Biltmore House has a pretty good backyard, eh?

Another great smile!

I love this shot!  So dramatic…

Bride in a tree!  I love it!

Cowboy boots and a wedding dress!  Can’t miss!

Some interesting recent news about the Biltmore Estate -

“Biltmore eyes new hotel in Antler Hill Village” – Dale Neal, Asheville Citizen-Times 2:28 p.m. EDT June 9, 2014

Biltmore may build a new 190-room hotel in the Antler Hill Village to offer more lodging to guests who want to stay on George Vanderbilt’s estate.

ASHEVILLE – Biltmore may build a 190-room hotel in Antler Hill Village to offer more lodging to guests who want to stay on George Vanderbilt’s estate.

The Biltmore Company filed an application with Buncombe County on Monday for a conditional zoning permit and will start to bid out the project. “It’s the next step in the process, but we still have not made a decision to build,” said Kathleen Mosher, Biltmore’s communications director.

As part of the analysis, bids from construction companies will be collected over the summer. A final decision could come in early August. Pending the final decision, construction could begin in mid-August with the hotel open to guests in 2015.

The company started a similar process in July 2011, considering the construction of a 152-room luxury hotel, the Lodge on Biltmore Estate, but decided not to pursue the project after collecting bids and more research, Mosher said.

Biltmore officials do not have a dollar estimate for the new project.

Designs are for a 145,000 square-foot, four-story structure with 190 double- and king-sized guest rooms adjacent to the Winery in Antler Hill Village.

Biltmore is working with PGAV Destinations, designers of the estate’s Antler Hill Village.

Biltmore has not settled on a name for the proposed hotel or a price point for the rooms.

Surveys done with research panels show the concept is popular, Mosher said. “This is in response to our guests who do ask about more lodging on the estate.”

The seven-story, 167,000-square foot Inn on Biltmore opened in 2001 and has proved very successful for the estate, Mosher said. The luxury hotel has 201 guest rooms and nine suites, above the winery, but tucked away from view from the Biltmore House.

Buncombe County’s zoning ordinance requires that the county Board of Adjustment approve buildings over 35,000-square feet in the county’s commercial service zoning district, which includes the Biltmore Estate, said Josh O’Conner, the county’s zoning administrator. “Biltmore has filed for a conditonal use permit. The plans are conceptual now. The review will get more rigorous as it goes along.”

The Board of Adjustment will take up the plans at its July 9 meeting.

Biltmore is trending toward a record year in visitation. With a fiscal year starting in July 2013 and closing at the end of this month, the estate could see 1.2 million guests.

Judge Strikes Down NC Gay Marriage Ban

RALEIGH, N.C. — Oct 10, 2014, 6:33 PM ET

By MICHAEL BIESECKER and MITCH WEISS Associated Press

A federal judge in North Carolina struck down the state’s gay marriage ban Friday, opening the way for the first same-sex weddings in the state to begin immediately.

U.S. District Court Judge Max O. Cogburn, Jr., in Asheville issued a ruling shortly after 5 p.m. declaring the ban approved by state voters in 2012 unconstitutional.

Cogburn’s ruling follows Monday’s announcement by the U.S. Supreme Court that it would not hear any appeal of a July ruling by the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond striking down Virginia’s ban. That court has jurisdiction over North Carolina.

“The court determines that North Carolina’s laws prohibiting same-sex marriage are unconstitutional as a matter of law,” wrote Cogburn, who was appointed to the federal bench by President Barack Obama. “The issue before this court is neither a political issue nor a moral issue. It is a legal issue and it is clear as a matter of what is now settled law in the Fourth Circuit that North Carolina laws prohibiting same sex marriage, refusing to recognize same sex marriages originating elsewhere, and/or threating to penalize those who would solemnize such marriages, are unconstitutional.”

Though Cogburn’s federal judicial district only covers the western third of the state, North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper said through a spokeswoman that the Asheville judge’s order applies statewide.

Buncombe County Register of Deeds Drew Reisinger kept his Asheville office open late to begin issuing marriage licenses to waiting couples the moment the ban was struck down. When the crowd gathered in the lobby heard the news, they erupted in cheers.

Within minutes, couples who brought ministers with them began exchanging their vows on the steps outside the register of deeds office.

“It’s a historical day for the state of North Carolina,” Reisinger said. “For a very long time I have been denying same-sex couples licenses, and it’s been heartbreaking because I’ve seen first-hand the harm done by discriminatory marriage laws. It’s autumn in Asheville and it’s a beautiful time to get married.”

The city is a progressive bastion nestled in the North Carolina mountains known for its vibrant downtown nightlife, art galleries and microbreweries. In anticipation of the ruling earlier this week, an enormous rainbow flag was draped across the front of Asheville’s landmark art-deco city hall to signal support for gay rights.

Cogburn ruled moments after a different federal judge in Greensboro delayed movement in two cases he oversees until Monday, following a last-ditch effort by Republican leaders at the state legislature to intervene in the cases. The case in which Cogburn ruled was filed by a group of clergy members seeking to marry same-sex couples, making the argument that their inability to do so under state law was an unconstitutional abridgment of their religious freedom.

“LGBT families in North Carolina will now be treated as equal under the law in North Carolina — a day that so many have fought so hard for,” said the Rev. Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, executive director of the Campaign for Southern Equality. “We celebrate knowing that this shameful chapter in North Carolina’s history has passed. At the same time we know that you can still be fired simply for being gay in North Carolina. Protection from discrimination in the workplace is the next step in our push for full equality.”

Gay marriage is now legal in North Carolina

By Michael Gordon

mgordon@charlotteobserver.com

Posted: Friday, Oct. 10, 2014

Same-sex marriage became legal in North Carolina Friday, with a federal judge ordering the state to immediately put aside its ban.

With a stroke of his pen, U.S. District Judge Max Cogburn of Asheville struck down the state’s bans on gay marriage.

The attorney for Republican legislative leaders said they will appeal. Earlier in the day, Cogburn denied their last-minute bid to join the court fight, including a case filed in Charlotte.

With the court’s decision, GOP leaders who had been running against the tide in their legal fight were forced to stand by as gay North Carolinians rushed to their courthouses to be married before anyone could stop them.

For the past 48 hours, attorneys for House Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate President Phil Berger have fired off a series of motions, including one asking the judge to delay any rulings until they had more time to make their arguments in court.

The legislators announced their intent to fight on Monday and by Wednesday had a lawyer making contact with the court. By Thursday, they had hired John Eastman, a conservative California law professor and one of the country’s best-known opponents to same-sex marriage.

Yet legal experts gave the General Assembly leaders, who had paved the way for voter approval of a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage in 2012, little to no chance of winning their fight.

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court stepped aside and allowed lower court rulings to stand that found same-sex marriage bans in Virginia and four other states unconstitutional. Because of the way the federal court system is organized, six other states were affected, including the Carolinas.

The decision led to a fractured North Carolina government in a matter of days, with Gov. Pat McCrory joining Cooper, his presumed Democratic opponent in 2016, in saying the state’s marriage rules had to change. Meanwhile, Tillis, locked in a close U.S. Senate race with Democratic incumbent Kay Hagan, and Berger pressed on despite the odds.

North Carolina now becomes the ninth of those states to have either approved same-sex marriage or taken steps to do so. In South Carolina, the state supreme court blocked the issuing of same-sex marriage licenses until a federal judge rules on a case there. The Kansas attorney general sought the same kind of order on Friday from that state’s high court.

Cogburn’s ruling is in keeping with a July ruling from the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals that struck down Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban. The court also has jurisdiction over Maryland, West Virginia and the Carolinas.

That decision was put on hold by an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. This week, the country’s highest court decided not to get involved, and Virginia started issuing marriage licenses to gay couples that afternoon.

The ruling also started the clock in the Carolinas, home to at least four marriage lawsuits that had been delayed until the Supreme Court made its thinking known.

Eastman, as chairman of the National Organization for Marriage, had tried unsuccessfully in May to take over the defense of Oregon’s marriage ban after that state’s attorney general announced he would no longer do it.

Here, he argued that the Virginia ruling should not take precedent because the attorney general there had made concessions in the case “that no reasonable attorney would ever make.”

Jake Sussman, the lead attorney in a Charlotte-based court challenge to the marriage laws, said the legislature’s effort to become involved in the long-running cases at their final stage was “strange, to say the least.”

“We are close to the end of this litigation and ready to banish Amendment One to the dustpan of history,” Sussman said. “We believe this is an unnecessary use of taxpayer money and judicial resources and seeks only to delay the inevitable.”

Some info about Table Rock Lodge from http://www.southcarolinaparks.com/tablerock/tablerock-lodge.aspx :

The lodge at Table Rock State Park is a carefully restored CCC-era facility with a commanding view of Table Rock Mountain, a large upstairs lodge room with furniture and fireplaces and a 72-seat dining room and catering kitchen on the lower level.

here’s not a more beautiful facility in the Upstate of South Carolina for weddings than the Table Rock Lodge. The Lodge consists of two levels. The upstairs area has two fireplaces and makes an ideal chapel-style setup for an indoor ceremony. There is also a charming bridal room upstairs that makes an ideal place for the bride and her bridesmaids to get ready for that special day. The upstairs area is complete with a covered balcony that includes rocking chairs for relaxing.

The downstairs room is setup as a dining area and makes a perfect location for an indoors or sit-down style reception. The downstairs area also includes a caterer’s kitchen, perfect for warming and serving food. Both upstairs and downstairs are ADA accessible and have restroom facilities.

The back patio at the lodge makes a great area for an outdoors wedding ceremony or an outdoors reception. It is complete with awesome views of Table Rock Mountain.

I agree with that.  Table Rock Lodge has been a great venue for wedding photography; I always enjoy the opportunity to photograph there!

Some cool information about Lake Junaluska from Wikipedia and how it got its great name:

Lake Junaluska is in Haywood County, North Carolina, part of the Asheville Metropolitan Area. The population was 2,734 at the 2010 census. It is notable as the site of the headquarters of the World Methodist Council, a consultative body linking almost all churches in the Methodist tradition. The WMC headquarters is itself located on the campus of the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center, an assembly for the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church which hosts Annual Conferences and other United Methodist and religious conferences and events. As well, the Lake is home to the Foundation for Evangelism incorporated by Harry Denman to provide funding to various seminaries, professorships, and youth ministries. As well, the Foundation provides resources and open source software for the local church.

Contrary to popular belief that Lake Junaluska is named after the famous Cherokee Indian leader Chief Junaluska, the assembly is actually named after nearby Mount Junaluska (now North Eaglenest Mountain), which is itself named after Chief Junaluska

The current chapel was constructed in 1941 with several additions and improvements made in subsequent years including major upgrades made in 2012.
